Week 1: PhotoStory

This is week 1 of our Skerries: Changes Over Time project. Over the next four weeks, as a class we are going to look at the different historical aspects of Skerries. As explained in class we are going to use this blog as a source of information and details for our project. You must check the blog regularly, I will remind you in class and follow the steps posted online.

LETS GET BLOGGING!!

Task 1: Create a Popplet
1. Think about what you already know about Skerries as a historical town, any places or things or people who are of historical relevance.
2. Brainstorm ideas on the historical Skerries, you can include things you know about Skerries, things you want to know, stories or places you want explored and questions you want answered.
This is your time to tell me what interests you about Skerries which will help make the project more enjoyable and personal.

There are many different ways to do a brainstorm and the most important thing is that you are comfortable and able to understand the form you are going to use.
You can either do a simple brainstorm version with your BIG THEME and then other smaller ideas out of that which can be very effective like this one:

Or you can do a more complicated brainstorm with colour coded sections that relate to one theme such as friends in the blue section and then smaller things that relate to the theme friends seen on this brainstorm:

Today you are going to make an online brainstorm called a Popplet.

Task 2

1. Look at the old images of Skerries in class
2. Can you tell where these images are taken?
3. Make a list in a group of the different streets or nearby landmarks, shops or places that help you to guess where the pictures are set in Skerries.

These photo's of various places in Skerries were taken from the
http://www.ihpc.ie website which shows old photo's from many different counties and towns. It is a great resource for projects.

Our Walk-About Skerries

Tomorrow, 27th of November 2013, we will be going on our Walk-About SkerriesWe will walk around the town and take photo's using the school cameras of the different areas we think we saw in the old photo's or areas we think are of historical significance.

What you will need:

  • Your signed permission slip saying you can leave the school- you may not be allowed to go if you do not bring this in
  • Your coat and any other clothing items, hat, scarf, gloves etc. it is winter now and make sure you have a hood on your jacket in case of rain.
  • I will give you the school cameras tomorrow so don't bring in any of your own equipment I will supply it.
  • The list of places we should go that we made in class all together.
  • Yourself!

Task 3 Create a Photo Story (Examples and Tutorials are on the resources page)
  1. From the photos we took on our Skerries Walk-About you will make a photo story using the picture story software we looked at at the start of the year.
  2. In your groups of 3 or 4 you will add photos to the photo story.
  3. See if you can map out our Skerries Walk-About using the photos in order, you can also include the old photo's on the blog for a before and after idea, it would like in very well to our Changes Over Time concept.

Here is a step by step web page for how to make a good photo story if you need to refresh you're memory:

Photostory WebLink

1. Now that you have added your photos to your photo stories, you can add some information about you're places to the different slides.
2. I want each person in your group to pick a few pictures (about 3) of different palces in Skerries and find out some information on each (about 4 points of imformation.) Make sure to pick different places.

You can record your voice on an ipod, or a tablet or you can use this online software: Audacity.

You can record you voice reading the information and include it in the Photostory.

Here is an example of a photo story with music and photos. Look at some of the effects used in the transitions of the photo's.
This video also includes a voice-over rather than writing information over the picture, this is an option you can discuss in you're groups and let me know if it is something you think will add to your photo story.

We will upload our PhotoStory's to the school website
